Amboise with kids: family things to do in the Loire Valley
With the family, the Loire Valley turns into a playground: machines to work, a river to follow, châteaux straight out of a storybook. Amboise sits right in the middle of it, and the Strolling King welcomes young and old alike. Here is plenty to keep a family busy, without ever rushing your step.
What to do in Amboise as a family?
Amboise is easy to cross on foot, along the banks of the Loire. Two châteaux in the centre, a river to follow, lanes to explore: children quickly find plenty to do. And for days in the fresh air, the Loire à Vélo and the gardens are never far.
| Activity | Where | For |
|---|---|---|
| Leonardo da Vinci's machines | Clos Lucé | the curious, all ages |
| The Royal Château | Amboise | history, views over the Loire |
| A bike ride | The Loire à Vélo | flat, family-friendly |
| The gardens | Chaumont, Villandry | fresh air, a feast for the eyes |
Clos Lucé, the children's favourite
Five minutes from the centre, Clos Lucé was Leonardo da Vinci's final home. Its vast grounds present his inventions at full scale: machines to touch, to work, to understand. For a child, a genius becomes an enormous construction set.
Cycling, flat, even with little ones
The Loire à Vélo follows the river with no hills and is well signposted. You hire bikes, set off along the water, stop for a picnic. An outing everyone enjoys, with no climbs to put anyone off.

Eating and sleeping as a family
Le Manoir by Louis 26 is at 19 avenue de Tours, in the heart of Amboise. An open-air terrace and a generous barbecue: just the thing to satisfy hungry explorers after a day outdoors. And for the night, the City Suites keep the family in the centre, a stone's throw from everything.
Planning your family stay
Amboise is an hour from Paris by train, and everything connects on foot or by bike. You unpack once, then roam from there, at the children's own pace.
