La Loire à Vélo: the Amboise stop, at Le Manoir de Louis 26

July 11, 2026 · 6 min read

On La Loire à Vélo, everything is flat, everything is beautiful, and you glide along with the water. All that remains is to choose where to park the handlebars come evening. In Amboise, the Strolling King has the answer: Le Manoir, a pedal-stroke from the route, to eat, sleep and ride on.

Amboise, the stop not to miss

La Loire à Vélo follows the river for nearly 900 kilometres, flat and well signposted. Amboise is one of its finest halts, halfway between Tours and Blois. You arrive along the quays, the château standing above the water, and the town is best crossed on foot.

It is the stop that has it all in one place: somewhere to eat, somewhere to sleep, and two châteaux to see without climbing back into the saddle.

How far from the other stops?

Enough to plan your day, in either direction.

Stop Distance from Amboise By bike
Tours ~27 km along the Loire, on the flat
Chaumont-sur-Loire ~20 km upstream, the next halt
Blois ~40 km the following stop, due east
Chenonceau ~20 km a detour along the Cher

Refuelling: the Manoir's barbecue

After a day in the saddle, you are truly hungry. The barbecue is the Manoir's signature: smoked meats, char-grilled vegetables, wholehearted generosity. You settle on the terrace, in the shade, you catch your breath, and the energy returns.

Le Manoir is at 19 avenue de Tours, right in the heart of Amboise, a pedal-stroke from the route.

Parking the bikes for the night

No need to hit the road again at sunset. The City Suites, within Le Manoir itself, keep you for the night. You sleep in the centre, you wake in Touraine, and the next day's stage begins well rested.

A château break, without getting back on the bike

For an evening or a morning, Amboise is best explored on foot. The Royal Château overlooks the Loire; the Clos Lucé, five minutes away, keeps the presence of Leonardo da Vinci. Two effortless visits, between two turns of the pedal.
